Alcohol and other drugs

We are supporting the alcohol and other drugs (AOD) treatment sector to grow and improve, focusing on:

  • building the capacity of the AOD sectors’ workforce through improved support in recruitment, retention and training of staff
  • improving coordination and integration of services, both between service providers within the sector, and as part of the broader primary health care system
  • helping service providers to monitor, evaluate and report on their performance.

This work is described in detail in our AOD Activity Workplan

AOD Workforce Development Assessment

In June 2017, we commissioned the National Centre for Education and Training on Addiction (NCETA) to undertake a project to:

  • develop a comprehensive understanding of the Northern Territory AOD workforce development needs as defined by the sector;
  • identify current workforce development gaps and how they could be addressed in a coordinated way;
  • identify opportunities to strengthen cross-sector referral pathways and responses incorporating the primary health care sector (particularly the Aboriginal community controlled health services sector) and the you and mental heatlh sectors.

An Executive Summary and Summary Report from NCETA are available. They provide an overview of the consultation and findings, and recommendations for the ongoing improvement and support of the Northern Territory AOD workforce.
