Area of Need Information

The Area of Need (AON) Program assists in the provision of medical services to locations in the Northern Territory (NT) which have limited access to medical services.

The objective of the AON Program is to provide temporary assistance to locations and services experiencing medical workforce shortages.The AON Program is an interim measure designed to ensure Territorians have access to appropriate levels of medical care during periods of medical workforce shortage.

How do health services apply?

Applications for a health service to be declared an AON must address the assessment criteria outlined in the Area of Need Policy. Applications should be lodged with the chief medical officer via email: e ocmo.doh@nt.gov.au

Documented evidence of labour market testing, demonstrating genuine attempts to recruit to the position within the previous 6 months must be provided in the application.

What role does NT PHN play?

NT PHN can provide assistance with advertising or seeking suitable GP trainees for recruitment. Read the Area of Need Policy for further information.
