Diabetes Nurse Educator – Healthy Living NT – Alice Springs

Rural Workforce Agency Northern Territory (RWA NT) are partnering with Healthy Living NT (HLNT) to find a Diabetes Nurse Educator to join their committed and passionate team delivering services in Alice Springs.

The Role
Working in coordination with a small multidisciplinary team, the successful Diabetes Nurse Educator provides expert delivery of safe, evidence based clinical care with effective education to people with Type 1, Type 2, GDM and IGT diabetes to key operating areas that include:

  • Urban and remote Aboriginal clinics
  • Newly referred patients in group and individual sessions
  • General diabetes clinic in group and individual sessions
  • Gestational clients

The role acts as a resource to deliver educational programs to other health professionals and clients, whilst overseeing the identification and development of diabetes educational resources for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and their health professionals.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide individual and group education and counselling for people with diabetes, their families or support networks
  • Travel to rural and remote regional areas of the Northern Territory to provide diabetes education in coordination with other medical and allied health staff
  • Oversee the identification and the development of diabetes educational resources, particularly for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and their health professionals
  • Liaise with referring with General Practitioners and other health professionals
  • Assist the Cardiac Educator in the delivery of cardiac rehabilitation programs
  • Maintain self-education in diabetes management, education and personal nursing practice
  • Adhere to the principles of best practice and in line with Healthy Living NT’s Guiding Values and identified in Healthy Livings NT’s Strategic Plan

Essential Criteria
To be considered for this opportunity, you must meet the below essential criteria:

  • Covering letter addressing the essential criteria
  • Tertiary qualifications in Diabetes Education with a preference for Credentialed Diabetes Educator status, or working towards
  • Registered Nurse with current AHPRA registration
  • Demonstrated clinical experience in the delivery of comprehensive diabetes education
  • Well-developed understanding of adult education learning principles, presentation skills, stages of behaviour change and group education
  • Demonstrated ability to participate in planning, implementing and evaluating education programs, resource development and health promotion activities
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently with excellent interpersonal skills and ability to work in a small multidisciplinary team within a cross cultural environment effectively
