Remote Area Nurse – Pintupi Homelands Health Service – Kintore

Pintupi Homelands Health Service Aboriginal Corporation (PHHS) are seeking a Male Remote Area Nurse for a permanent role on a month on, month off basis, job sharing with another Remote Area Nurse, starting 24 June 2022.

What’s the role?
The role of a Remote Area Nurse is to work as part of the PHHS clinical team delivering a comprehensive approach to primary health and integrated emergency care such as the treatment of acute illness, antenatal and postnatal care, child health care, child and adult immunisations, well person screening, management of chronic disease and sexual health.
Responsibilities include, but not limited to-

  • Encouraging an efficient client centred delivery, effective communication and promotion of Primary Health Care
  • Working in a cooperative manner with Indigenous clients taking into consideration their cultural practices and beliefs, especially in relation to health, wellbeing and Western medicine
  • Providing general health care assessment and management of a broad range of clinical problems, in consultation with the General Practitioner, and in accordance with the CARPA Standard Treatment Manual and the Minymaku Kutju Tjukurpa Women’s Business Manual
  • Providing preventive health checks, delivering health education and promoting health awareness
  • Providing accident and emergency care including emergency first aid and stabilisation until emergency transportation arrives from PHHS Clinic
  • In liaison with Clinic GP, RN’s and CW’s work with chronic disease clients in the planning of care which includes self-management goals and as necessary coordinated team care arrangements

Is the role right for you?
To be successful, you will have demonstrated post-graduate experience in the delivery of comprehensive primary health, including emergency care. You will have solid understanding of good clinical practice and rural/remote health care, with demonstrated experience in a wide range of practical nursing duties and procedures, as well as knowledge of relevant legislation that governs nursing practice. Importantly, you will be a collaborative team player with outstanding communication and interpersonal skills, and the ability to adapt your communication style to work effectively with people from a wide range of cultures and backgrounds.
Before you reach out and apply, we need you to have:

  • Registration with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA) as a Registered Nurse
  • A minimum three years full time broad based nursing experience demonstrating a sound professional background and ability to work with minimal supervision and/or with autonomy
  • Understanding of issues affecting Aboriginal health, principles of Primary Health Care and relevant legislation governing work practice
  • Manual Drivers Licence (NT licence after 3 months service) and a willingness to travel by 4WD
  • Desirable skills would be formal training on Advance Life Support, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander (ATSI) Remote Emergency Care, ATSI Maternity Emergency Care, Paediatric Emergency Care and Triage Emergency Care and extensive knowledge and/or experience in management of chronic disease

What’s it like living in Kintore?
Kintore is located in the Northern Territory, some 530 kilometres west of Alice Springs. This remote part of Outback Australia is truly beautiful and is a popular tourist destination for 4WD and trekking enthusiasts. Kintore has a school (Walungurru School), college (high school and adult), child care centre, church, store, airstrip, health clinic, police station and a swimming pool. Kintore is also a major centre for the Western Desert art movement which began at the community of Papunya. The Pintupi people traditionally pass on significant Dreamtime stories by way of art using sand, rock and local plants and today, canvas paintings from the Kintore region have gained international acclaim.
