Urapunjta Health Service (Urapuntja) is seeking highly skilled and enthusiastic Remote Area Nurses. Urapuntja is one of Australia’s longest running Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Services being established in 1977. Developed to serve the needs of the Utopia community and surrounding homelands, Urapuntja prides itself on its deep connection to community and outstanding health service results. Urapuntja provides services to a population of about 600 to 1000 permanent residents who live in 16 homeland communities. They are unique in that they deliver an outreach service to all 16 outstation communities every week and their primary clinic is not in the middle of the community.

What’s the role?
The Urapuntja Clinic is situated at Amengernternenh & services many remote outstations and is well equipped with six 4WD vehicles for this purpose. Staffing levels are subject to availability. Generally there is 2 Medical Officers & 4 Registered Nurses along with the Clinic Manager / CEO.
Responsibilities include, but not limited to-

  • Providing services such as health promotion and education, chronic disease management, family planning and childhood immunisation
  • Undertaking other responsibilities as reasonably requested by the Clinic Manager in accordance with your skills and qualifications
  • Having a strong respect and support for fellow workers, the desire to step up when required and work as a team player
  • Improving wellness outcomes across the community by participating in engagement events, activities and social functions
  • Maintaining electronic patient databases such as Communicare
  • Participating in the on-call roster to meet community emergency needs

Before you reach out and apply, we need you to have a:

  • Sound understanding of the challenges a RAN faces; working and living in a remote area
  • Demonstrated ability to practice in a culturally safe and appropriate manner
  • Respect for Aboriginal culture and/or the willingness to engage and learn
  • Registration with AHPRA as a Registered Nurse and well established primary health care skills
  • Current NT ‘C’ Class drivers licence with demonstrated skills to drive on unsealed roads
  • National Police Clearance (within 3 months), approved COVID-19 vaccination and NT Ochre Card

What’s it like living in Utopia?
Located 270 km North East of Alice Springs, Urapuntja provides health services to the Eastern Anmatyarre and Alyawarre people who are the traditional owners of the land. There are sixteen outstations within the community covering some 3,230 km2. The larger community of Alparra, 10 kilometres south of the Utopia Clinic, has a store that sells the usual items found in a small community supermarket, along with hot take away food. Arlparra is also where there is a police station that serves the region along with a primary school. Outstation populations can vary from 20 to 100. Utopia homelands have an extreme desert climate. The summer is hot with temperatures often exceeding forty degrees celsius. In winter the nights are cold, often sub-zero and frosts occur from June to August.
