2022 Community Achievement Awards

NT PHN has congratulated Darwin hairdressing salon, Deadly Hair Dude, for winning the 2022 Health and Wellbeing Award at this year’s Community Achievement Awards NT.

The Northern Territory Community Achievement Awards began in 2020, with the purpose of recognising individuals, organisations and groups who are making a difference in our local communities and across the NT.

The awards, run by Awards Australia, provide an opportunity to acknowledge their tireless efforts and the impact their actions have on the community with a gala ceremony recognising NT Winners and Nominees held in Darwin over the weekend.

NT PHN CEO, Gill Yearsley, said the organisation was proud to sponsor the Awards.

“Territorians love giving back, and that’s one of the many reasons why we’re proud sponsors of this event,” she said.

“It was great to hear more about some of the fantastic individuals doing wonderful work in our community, particularly Deadly Hair Dude, the winner of our 2022  Northern Territory PHN Health and Wellbeing Award.

“This award recognises and rewards the efforts of individuals, community groups or small business owners within the Territory who are dedicated to improving health and wellbeing in their communities.”

Deadly Hair Dude provides Indigenous people across the Territory with hairdressing training and a pathway for meaningful employment. Owner, Gary Strachan also works closely with people in remote communities, detention centres, and youth suicide prevention centres.

Since it was established, Deadly Hair Dude has:

  • been invited to over 16 communities across the NT
  • run over 300 trials
  • trained over 25 students
  • provided over 6000 haircuts.

“Having a job improves physical and mental health and boosts a person’s self-esteem and confidence,” said Mrs Yearsley.

“The impact Deadly Hair Dude has made on the community through such an innovative program is an inspirational achievement and we congratulate the team on all their hard work.”
