NT PHN are partnering with Relationships Australia NT (RANT) to find a Group Facilitator / Counsellor to join their multidisciplinary team in Katherine. Relationships Australia NT is a community based, not for profit Australian organisation that provides relationship support services to individuals, families and communities. Their services are for all members of the community regardless of religious belief, age, gender, sexual orientation, lifestyle choice, cultural background or economic circumstances. They offer services around the country that include counselling, family dispute resolution (mediation) and a range of family and community support and education programs.
In this role you will provide support to families to raise children in a safe and supportive environment, through the delivery of the DRUMBEAT program and therapeutic interventions, HCT programs to children and their families living in the Katherine region – remote and township.
- Develop, document, oversee and provide on-site effective, innovative and culturally appropriate therapeutic responses for children in remote Indigenous communities
- Facilitate opportunities for whole of family interventions with parents and kinship carers focused on the impact that these experiences have on the Link children and families from the target group to other appropriate support services and networks
- Liaise closely, within a care team framework; with other services including Territory Families (TF), schools and caseworkers involved in the support of the children and families targeted in this program
- Provide opportunities for brief interventions with parents and family members focused on the impact that has on the child
- Plan and co-facilitate therapeutic DRUMBEAT groups for vulnerable children (5 -12yrs) within contract guidelines, in remote communities of the Katherine region
- Supervise and mentor Aboriginal Children and Family Support Workers, participating in monthly Line Management meetings/ supervision
- Link children and families form the target group to other appropriate support services and networks
- In consultation with Manager of Children’s Therapeutic Services: Darwin & Remote and other staff, develop protocols and practice for service delivery
- Work in collaboration with TF under a joint case management arrangement when deemed appropriate
- Liaise and network to ensure knowledge of the two Communities for Children Programs (0-12yrs) are promoted in appropriate formats that will encourage participation
- Evaluate and review practice, adjusting it to best meet the needs of clients within the intent and spirit of the original concept and based on the RANT working with children framework
To be considered for this opportunity, you must meet the below essential criteria:
- Qualifications in Social Work, Psychology or other relevant Humanitarian or Social Science qualification, as well as: -
*Ability to meet RANT standard of professional competence appropriate to delivering therapeutic responses to children
- Minimum 3-5 years experience working therapeutically (delivering group programs and/or one on one) with children in a professional setting
- Knowledge and understanding of the dynamics and effects of ‘high impact stress’ and other trauma on children and on family functioning including the connection and effects of child abuse and neglect
- Sound knowledge of child development theory, trauma theory and attachment theory
- Demonstrated experience of working with therapeutic models of practice that build resilience and protective behaviours in children and families; group programs and/or working one on one.
- Experience in the provision of culturally sensitive services to Aboriginal people
- Experience in mentoring and supervising Aboriginal staff
- Ability to undertake professional and community liaison and networking with the community, service providers and government agencies
- Skills in project development and possession of high level oral and written communication and administrative skills

The Location: Katherine Region
The town of Katherine is the thriving main town within this sub-tropical region, situated a three hour drive south of Darwin. The main town is situated on the banks of the Katherine river and has a population of around 10,000 people while the larger Katherine region has a population of just over 24,000. Katherine is well equipped as a regional town with a shopping centre that features a supermarket and many specialty shops. Katherine is on the edge of Kakadu National park which is filled with waterfalls and bush walks. Kayaking through the picturesque Katherine Gorge is a popular weekend activity.
