VACANCY DETAILS

Rural Workforce Agency (RWA) NT is partnering with Sunrise Health Service Aboriginal Corporation (SHSAC) to find a Aboriginal Mental Health Professional to join their multidisciplinary team in Katherine. SHSAC is an independent, community-controlled health service that provides comprehensive primary health care services through nine individual remote health centres. The main purpose is to improve the health and wellbeing of the people in the region east of Katherine using a holistic approach that includes a high standard of medical care, the promotion of social justice and the overcoming of the sickness that affects so many people in the region. The main approach involves community people taking part in controlling their own health.

This position is located within the Mental Health team at SHSAC but functions as part of the wider Population Health team. In this role you will participate in the clinical care and the social and emotional wellbeing of Aboriginal clients. You will work closely with the Mental Health Nurses and support SHSAC staff, to provide culturally appropriate social and emotional support and counselling services to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander individuals, families and groups within SHSAC Katherine East region.

User-added imageThe town of Katherine is the thriving main town within this sub-tropical region, situated a three hour drive south of Darwin. The main town is situated on the banks of the Katherine river and has a population of around 10,000 people while the larger Katherine region has a population of just over 24,000. Katherine is well equipped as a regional town with a shopping centre that features a supermarket and many specialty shops. Katherine is on the edge of Kakadu National park which is filled with waterfalls and bush walks. Kayaking through the picturesque Katherine Gorge is a popular weekend activity.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Contribute to the delivery of culturally appropriate SEWB activities for Aboriginal people of the Sunrise region that incorporates community development, engagement and clinical components
  • Provide culturally appropriate mental healthcare and SEWB in partnership with the other mental health staff
  • Focus on clinical activities around both mental health clients as well as those with complex chronic disease to prevent SEWB complications
  • Provide opportunities to increase and share cultural knowledge and skills in mental health within the local Aboriginal communities
  • Work in partnership with primary health care to support individuals and families to build SEWB resilience using an approach that builds on community and cultural strengths
  • Engage in Health promotion, preventative activities and community meetings to ensure SEWB issues are addressed
  • Be involved in orientation of new staff to both cross-cultural and SEWB approaches
  • Capture and share clinical information with relevant healthcare providers, including using patient clinical records
  • Meet the relevant data reporting requirements
  • Cluster leader roles include administrative activities for the cluster as well as coordination of the team meetings and intake meetings

ESSENTIAL CRITERIA

To be considered for this opportunity, you must meet the below essential criteria:

  • Certificate IV in Mental health
  • Experience in the Aboriginal mental health sector
  • Experience working within a multidisciplinary team environment
  • Understanding of primary health care in remote locations
  • Good communication skills including well developed cross-cultural interpersonal skills
  • Proficiency in Microsoft office suite and clinical databases
  • Demonstrated experience, communication and management ability in the delivery of programs, including proven regular program written reports
  • Experience in management of other staff and teams

BENEFITS AND INCENTIVES 

  • Salary range $82,248 - $86,533
  • Ongoing contract subject to funding
