What is Northern Territory PHN?

Our vision is that people in the Northern Territory enjoy their best health and wellbeing. We strive to achieve this vision by building local partnerships, and directing resources for an integrated and high quality primary health care system.

We help Territorians receive the right health care, in the right place, at the right time by:

 

  • commissioning the delivery of health services
  • providing support to the primary health care workforce
  • supporting integration across the acute and primary health care sectors.

 

We do not provide services directly to people – we engage with stakeholders and regional communities to commission services to deliver primary health care. We work to improve people’s experience and journey of care.

 

As the Territory’s Rural Workforce Agency (RWA NT), we also attract, recruit, educate and retain a professional primary health care workforce across the NT. 

 

Our structure

While the Northern Territory covers a large area (1.3 million square kilometres), it is sparsely populated with roughly 245,000 people, including a significant constituency of Aboriginal people. To provide effective coverage of this area, NT PHN has offices in Darwin, Alice Springs, Katherine and Nhulunbuy and a single, integrated management and program structure. This management approach provides for efficient, coordinated and integrated service planning and strong links to regional clinical public health advisory groups, hospitals, health services, peak bodies and government departments.

 

We are a not-for-profit company – Health Network Northern Territory Ltd – that operates as NT PHN. Our company members are Aboriginal Medical Services Alliance Northern Territory (AMSANT), the Northern Territory Government (NTG) Department of Health and the Health Providers Alliance NT (HPANT). NT PHN is funded by the Australian Government as the Territory’s Primary Health Network. NT PHN commenced operating on 1 July 2015.

More information on Primary Health Networks (PHNs)

PHNs operate across Australia and are tasked by the Australian Government with coordinating primary health care delivery, and tackling local health care needs and service gaps. NT PHN receives funding from the Australian Government as the Territory’s Primary Health Network. NT PHN commenced operating on 1 July 2015.

 

PHNs were established to increase the efficiency and effectiveness of medical services for patients – particularly those at risk of poor health outcomes – and to better coordinate care to ensure patients receive the right care in the right place at the right time. There are 31 PHNs across Australia.
